Conta a lenda que, no antigo Castelo da Ilha, o nobre Paiva acolhia os marinheiros dos rabelos com pão quente e abrigo. Em troca, recebia os mais nobres vinhos do Douro, que guardava nas caves do castelo, antes de os fazer chegar às casas senhoriais da região. Com o tempo, a fama daquele vinho cresceu, despertando cobiça e disputas entre nobres vizinhos. Foi então que Paiva, firme, declarou: "No Castelo de Paiva, é a minha vontade que reina!"
Diz-se que foi dessa frase que nasceu o nome do concelho.

Legend has it that, in the ancient Castle of the Island, the nobleman Paiva would welcome the rabelo boat sailors with warm bread and shelter. In return, he received the finest wines of the Douro, which he stored in the castle's cellars before sending them on to the stately homes of the region. Over time, the fame of that wine grew, stirring envy and rivalry among neighbouring nobles. It was then that Paiva, resolute, declared: "In the Castle of Paiva, it is my will that reigns!"
It is said that from this very phrase the name of the municipality was born.
